After its recent Summicron SL 35 and 50 F2 ASPH, Leica is expanding its range of “accessible” lenses by unveiling a 100-400mm telephoto zoom for photographers in need of a versatile long focal length.

The longest Leica focal length
Still young, the Leica SL system sees its optical park grow by a thirteenth lens in order to complete its offer. The new Vario-Elmar SL 100-400mm f/5-6.3 thus becomes the lens with the longest focal length. Finally an alternative to the APO Vario-Elmarit SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4, both more affordable and adapted to the needs of the sports or wildlife photographer.

For those who need an even longer focal length, Leica is adding a 1.4x multiplier to its range to go to a 140-560mm equivalent. This Extender L 1.4x saves metadata to keep non-multiplier settings.
For its part, the Vario-Elmar SL 100-400mm f/5-6.3 does not hide its desire to seduce demanding photographers with a construction worthy of the German optician. In addition, Leica does not leave things to chance and has thought of adding an adjustable, removable and Arca-Swiss compatible tripod support, useful with such a long focal length. Finally, this new Vario-Elmar lens is obviously stabilized.
Price and availability
For photographers equipped with a hybrid from the Leica SL range, the new 100-400 mm telephoto lens is already available on the shelves. Its price is quite affordable given the manufacturer’s policy. It costs “only” 2250 €, which makes it the second cheapest lens from Leica.
The Extender L 1.4x focal length multiplier is available for 920 €.
