Leonardo: what slice of Leonardo da Vinci’s life is told in the France 2 series?

The Leonardo series will be launched on February 7 on France 2 with the first two episodes broadcast from 9:10 p.m. It will focus on the secrets of Leonardo da Vinci’s life at a very specific time.

It is this evening of February 7 that the historical series Leonardo starts on France 2. All fans of the genius inventor Leonardo da Vinci can rejoice: his life will be at the heart of eight episodes that will retrace a particular moment in his life which promises to be rich in twists and turns. It is indeed in his years of apprenticeship that the series is interested Leonardo, which will allow viewers to learn more about the entire process of creating this mythical man. And who says creation says inspiration and muse, so that’s why the series described as a European blockbuster will focus in particular on Caterina da Cremona, an essential woman in the life of Leonardo da Vinci.

History of Compete with big streaming platforms on which the historical series are multiplying, the production signed L’Alliance – which associates France Télévisions, the Italian Rai and the German ZDF – did not look at the expense. Leonardo can therefore boast of having a rather attractive cast with in particular the French Robin Renucci and Hugo Beckerbut also the American Freddie Highmore who stars in The Good Doctor. As for the role of Leonardo da Vinci himself, it was an Irish actor who got it, Aiden Turner. Enough to ensure a great success, even if the series should have been broadcast a long time ago. Indeed Leonardo was to be broadcast in 2020 – a year not chosen at random since it was about the 500 years since the death of Leonardo da Vinci – but, like many others, the series had to be put on hiatus due to Covid-19.

A season 2 is already planned

The production still managed to meet all the challenges and shoot the eight episodes that will be broadcast in the coming weeks on France 2. Interviewed by Pointthe chain moreover turned out to be very proud of this series of which they expect a lot. With a neat aesthetic and a fictionalized historical narrative adapted to the television format, France 2 explains that “the goal is not necessarily to reach 15-17 year olds, but at least to reach a wider family audience”. And the chain is so optimistic about this international production – it must be said that it has already purchased and distributed in several countries – than Leonardo has already been renewed for a season 2, as announced by producer Luca Bernabei. The sequel, which would be filmed for 2023, would however look at another period in the life of Leonardo da Vinci: his time at the court of the pope.
