Less fresh money for French fintechs in 2022

French finance start-ups have raised 2.4 billion euros this year, according to figures from the Fintech Observatory published Thursday, a sum lower than the 2.8 billion raised last year.

The president of this observatory, Mikal Ptachek, observes a contraction, not a collapsethe financing of technology companies active in payments, insurance or services to the financial sectors.

the sluggish economic context makes investors, the vast majority of investment funds, more demanding, he explained to AFP. This slowdown could continue in 2023, in line with an already more cautious second half of 2022 in terms of amounts raised by these young shoots, all based in France.

However, the number of operations is up this year compared to last year: 138 against 101. The ten most important financings, including that of the payroll management specialist for SMEs Payfit (254 million euros in January) and the insurtech Alan (183 million euros in May), represent more than half of the total high since the beginning of the year.

16 fintechs have gone out of business

The Number Observatory 450 fintechs since its first surveys in the early 2010s. Since 2016, notes Mr. Ptachek, 50 have ceased their activity, including 16 this year alone. Among them are two subsidiaries of Crdit Mutuel Arka: the reimbursement application between individuals Pumpkin, a competitor of Lydia, and Aumax for me (formerly Max), which offers payment services but also wealth management and concierge services.
