LG OLED EX: the promise is a 30% increase in brightness

OLED has a lot of quality but one of its flaws, when compared to LED, mini LED or microLED technologies, is its lower brightness. LG Display therefore introduces its new OLED EX panels.

At CES 2021, LG introduced its new OLED Evo technology on the G1 series. The main novelty of this technology was a higher maximum brightness.

How? ‘Or’ What ? The structure of the OLED panel was the same, except that for each pixel, made up of four subpixels (one green, one red, one blue, and one white), the white and red subpixels were larger in order to improve the maximum brightness of the panel. They also used organic deuterium elements which better withstand the rise in temperature.

We obtained more than 780 cd / m² in peak brightness, which is impressive for an OLED panel. For comparison, the peak brightness of a C1 OLED TV was around 660 cd / m². But this is not the record for OLED panels, given that the Panasonic 65HZ2000 exceeds 950 cd / m².

In 2022, LG is therefore introducing a new technology called OLED EX… with + 30% promised brightness.

OLED EX: greater brightness

Regarding the structure of the panels, LG Display states that OLED EX panels for the first time use deuterium organic elements instead of hydrogen based ones.

The choice of deuterium is linked to its ability to increase the brightness of screens while maintaining high efficiency over the long term. To use it, however, LG had to optimize the process to apply it to organic emitters.

The contribution of luminosity brought by the change of organic components is also combined with what is called the ” machine learning“.

A set of algorithms allow OLED EX displays to have more control over the slabs. More concretely, the artificial intelligence used can predict how the self-emitting pixels of OLEDs will be used. It then takes control of the energy supply to optimize it… but also to optimize the heating of the structure.

The OLED EX will also have an improved design: we are talking about borders reduced from 6 to 4 millimeters on a 65-inch model, or about 30% less.

Obviously, LG Display designs panels… it will be necessary to wait for the announcements of CES 2022, LG Electronics should announce the first televisions equipped with OLED EX panels.
