Liberation strike? – VW ID.2: This is what happens when you want to have something!

At VW the signs point to change. Instead of being cheap and unemotional, the Wolfsburg cars of the future should also have an attractive interior design, arouse emotions – and still remain affordable. An ax with which to strike in this notch is the VW ID.2. If it’s anywhere near as cool as the prototype we were allowed to examine (or camera), they’ll rip it out of their hands.

At the “Car Design Event” in Munich, the electric compact that the group was longing for was one of the exhibits – or rather two, because the Drivers & Business Club not only featured the design model of the ID.2all, which we talked about a year ago have reported, but also a prototype with the interior concept. And that’s what it’s all about. High-quality materials, intelligent details and instruments that bring tears of emotion to the eyes of nostalgics: the speedometer of the original Golf can be displayed on the digital instrument cluster. Alternatively, there is also a VW Beetle style design. Or just normal digital displays. There are also corresponding views for the central touchscreen. There is also a clear design, but not the usual VW plastic, but materials that you like to look at and touch, high-quality, soft plastics, the dashboard covered with fabric, and the screens are not pressed together in an uninspired way, like which was recently done with pleasure at VW. A warm “Welcome back!” also for four window regulator buttons! And there are no touch elements on the steering wheel, but rather small rollers that are easy to use and real buttons. Bigger on the inside than the outside? The VW ID.2 is supposed to offer a spaciousness on the outside dimensions of a VW Polo that exceeds that of the Golf. The prototype gives an idea that we can expect a lot in this regard: The seat of the back seat can be folded up and reveals a lot of storage space – you can easily do without a frunk. This is where you can easily store the charging cable, which in current VWs is hidden under the false floor of the trunk. This in turn is a cue for the next sensational innovation: not only small items fit under the trunk floor, but three huge water crates. A real space miracle. What’s still missing is knee and leg room in the second row, and you also have to bend your legs a lot there because the floor is too high. But that should change by the time of the series version. The reason is obvious: the interior model was built on the floor pan of a VW T-Roc because the dimensions basically fit. But of course you don’t have the options of an electric platform here. Out with the Beelzebub! But you can actually drive the interior VW, in contrast to the ID.2all, which only shows the design that the designers have adopted internally. There have never been door handles inserted into the rear windows; up until now there have always had to be real handles in the door. An indication that many things will be possible at VW in the future that were previously unthinkable. It is a lengthy undertaking to drive out fundamentally austerity decisions under the aegis of Herbert Diess like Beelzebub. However, one should not expect too much, for example that the ID.2, the so-called 25,000 euro car, will be available at dealers as early as 2025. No, at the end of next year the series version will celebrate its world premiere in front of invited guests. You should be able to order it in March 2026 and it will roll out to dealers in summer 2026. Just don’t wait, good things take time. Also new at VW.
