In August 2002, days of extreme rainfall caused severe flooding and mudslides. All of central Germany is affected. On August 12, 2002, the Müglitz, which otherwise flows so gently, in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge, turns into an unpredictable stream that sweeps away everything that is not firmly anchored.
Here in the Eastern Ore Mountains, up to 350 liters of rainwater fall per square meter within 24 hours. The flood hits the residents completely unexpectedly. The towns of Glashütte and Schlottwitz were particularly affected by the destruction. A young woman drowns. But not only the Müglitztal is flooded, also in Grimma people have to be saved from the water masses.
Almost 20 years later, you can still feel how much the residents suffered from this flood disaster.
