Lightyear One: the most efficient electric car? That’s what his circuit tests say

Lightyear continues to work to optimize its One model. Recently, the Dutch firm unveiled excellent figures during a new extensive test in Italy.

With such results, the Lightyear One far exceeds the range and energy consumption averages compared to most electric vehicles.

A new full-scale test conducted in Italy

The Lightyear One is no longer unknown to the general public and it continues to improve its performance in real conditions. Launched at an average speed of 130 km/h, the Lightyear One has maintained a range exceeding 400 km between two full charges, even at such a pace, in an outside temperature of 10 degrees and rather sunny weather.

Launched as a prototype on June 25, 2019, this electric car with a solar roof was tested on the Aprilia circuit (Italy). Within the European test center of the firm Bridgestone, the tested model is equipped with its tires from the Turanza Eco range, visible in the video below, in line with the official partnership announced on April 22, 2021. And for good reason , Lightyear’s work focuses, among other things, on three optimizations, and in particular that of the tires fitted to the One. Even more, the firm is working on the aerodynamics of the model, as well as its efficiency at high speed.


The convincing results place the Lightyear One above many electric cars. With its 60 kWh battery, its journey of more than 400 km increases it well beyond the average autonomy observed, which is 265 km for comparable electric vehicles (according to Lightyear). Even more, it stands out with a consumption of only 141 Wh per kilometer, much less than the 211 Wh per kilometer of the average proposed by Lightyear for electric cars comparable to the One.

Lightyear, which therefore claims that its One could travel an average distance 1.5 times greater than a vehicle equipped with a 60 kWh battery under conditions similar to those of its test, nevertheless claims to have had to make calculations based on the data. announced by other manufacturers for their respective vehicles. Indeed, electric cars equipped with 60 kWh batteries are not legion.

The Dutch firm wishes in particular to rub shoulders with the Model 3, Model S and Model Y from Tesla, as well as the Ioniq from Hyundai. She is also full of ambition on her blog:

We have every intention of launching the most efficient car on the market. […] These results tell us, unequivocally, that we are well on our way to producing the most efficient car ever. »
