Lily Allen, 38, spoke plainly about balancing children and a career. The British pop singer and actress, who is the mother of two daughters, revealed in an interview that although she loved her children, they had “totally ruined” her career.

Lily Allen: “You can’t have everything”

“My children ruined my career,” she admits with a laugh when she is a guest on the “Radio Times Podcast”. “I love them and they complete me, but in terms of pop stardom they ruined it.” She continues: “It really annoys me when people say you can have it all, because honestly, you can’t.”

The fact that she chose family instead of her career was rooted in her own childhood. “Some people choose their career over their children, and that’s their right,” said Allen, who married “Stranger Things” star David Harbour, 48, in September 2020 in Las Vegas. “But when I was a kid, my parents were pretty absent, and I feel like that really left some bad scars that I don’t want to repeat on myself.” Her father is actor Keith Allen, 70, who left her mother, film producer Alison Owen, 63, when Allen was just four years old.

“I’m glad I did that”

That’s why she doesn’t regret her decision. “So I decided to take a step back and focus on her [die Kinder] to focus,” says Allen. “And I’m glad I did because I think they’re pretty well-advised people.”

For years Lily Allen was one of London’s party girls before she moved to the country in 2011 and had children. The “Smile” interpreter has two daughters: Ethe Mary, 12, and Marnie Rose, 10, from her marriage to her ex-husband Sam Cooper, 46. She now lives in New York with her daughters and her husband David Harbor. She released her last studio album in 2018.
