Ahen Argentina founded the first clubs dedicated exclusively to football in the late nineteenth century, the initiative came from British immigrants, more precisely from schools and trade associations in the capital. The club names of the first Argentine league in 1893 were: Buenos Aires English High School, Quilmes Rovers, Old Caledonians, St. Andrew’s. Only those who had their own s stadium in the city were allowed to take part, and when things got busy, five hundred people came.
When Pope Francis reports today that he is a fan of the capital city club San Lorenzo Almagro, at first glance it looks like a piece of Argentine folklore: typical Latin America! But behind this is the old belief that football not only disciplines the body, but also the soul. It was a representative of the Salesian Order named Lorenzo Massa who allowed the boys of this neighborhood of Buenos Aires to play soccer if they attended Mass, and so in 1908 San Lorenzo was founded.
