FDP ministries are planning a wave of promotions

The traffic light fights for the household. While Finance Minister Lindner insists on austerity measures, he also wants to promote 28 employees of his ministry. This is planned and necessary. A second FDP-run house is also planning upgrades.

Shortly before the end of the year, according to a media report, there will be a wave of promotions in FDP-led federal ministries despite the budget crisis. While the Construction, Environment and Family Ministries have only registered one promotion each and the Economics Ministry wants to hire five employees, 59 names are listed in the Federal Ministry of Justice and Federal Ministry of Finance, reports the digital media service “Table.Media”.

The wave of promotions would come at a sensitive time. 17 billion euros must be removed from the budget for 2024. According to the report, the Ministry of Finance explained the upgrades affecting its own house as a normal step. It is about the promotion of employees who “were assessed as government directors with the status of department heads as of August 2022,” Table.Media quoted a spokesman for the authority as saying. These promotions are part of the “regular personnel development for managers” in the BMF. “The 28 promotion positions result from retirements and other vacancies.”

New state secretary, new department head

One of the vacancies in the Ministry of Finance is certainly due to the resignation of the long-time State Secretary Werner Gatzer who was responsible for Department II – Federal Budget. With a short interruption, he has held office as State Secretary since 2005 under ministers Peer Steinbrück, Wolfgang Schäuble, Olaf Scholz and Christian Lindner. In a message to his employees in the Ministry of Finance, Lindner linked the Constitutional Court’s decision regarding the federal budget to Gatzer.

Wolf Reuter, the previous head of the department for financial policy and economic policy issues, will now take Gatzer’s place. According to the organizational chart, it is not yet clear who will head his department in the future. Regarding the new State Secretary, the ministry said: “Financial policy is facing major challenges that must be addressed both in fact and in economic policy terms.” Reuter has the best prerequisites for this.
