Darts star breaks off match and criticizes “pathetic” tournament

He is behind, breaks off the match and vents his anger on Instagram: Gerwyn Price attracts negative attention at the darts tournament in Wigan. Prodigy Luke Littler is unaffected by the excitement; the 17-year-old plays a perfect game.

Top player Gerwyn Price caused a stir at a darts tournament in Wigan against Brendan Dolan. At the first event on the Pro Tour, the Welshman abandoned his match when the score was 2:4 and left the stage. When the break came, Dolan was just two legs away from victory.

Price then took to Instagram to criticize the organizers. “Absolutely miserable conditions,” wrote the former world champion. “You travel all the way to Wigan to play in a professional game and then have to play in amateur conditions.” The current number five in the world did not go into further detail. But according to reports, what bothered him most was the cold in the room. According to the Dartsnieuws.com portal, there have been some complaints about it locally.

Price also announced that he would not be taking part in the second event in Wigan this Tuesday. “I’ve never given up a game. Well, that means I’ll be out tomorrow too,” Price continued. “It’s a shame because my game was really good today and I rely so much on these events.” Before the duel with Dolan, Price had celebrated victories against Karel Sedlacek from the Czech Republic (6:5) and the Englishman Matthew Dennant (6:2) at the so-called Players Championship 1.

It’s not the first time Price has attracted negative attention. Last year he surprisingly lost the quarter-finals against the German Gabriel Clemens at the World Cup. In order to turn the game around, the former rugby professional came out of the break for the fourth set with huge headphones – either to provoke and upset Clemens or to be able to focus better. In any case, his excessive cheering, shouting and sometimes arrogant behavior is a thorn in the side of darts fans.

Luke Littler was undeterred by the excitement surrounding Price. The 17-year-old darts prodigy threw a rare nine-darter 6-1 against Michele Turetta on his Pro Tour debut at the same event. With the minimum number of nine arrows, the vice world champion achieved 501 points to 0, which is a perfect game in darts.
