Orange Livebox 7, a technological success and better speeds

The Livebox 7, available online and in stores since October 4, has taken a major technological step forward, joining Bouygues Telecom and SFR, the first to have launched an XGS-PON compatible box. Orange does not deny it: the objective is the quality of the network, before the speeds, as Laetitia Orsini Sharps, general public director of the company, reminds us. But all the same, to meet the growing expectations of consumers and professionals, the transition was essential. So, what does “XGS-PON” mean?

Literally, we are talking about “10 Gigabits Symmetric Passive Optical Network” technology, the most recent evolution of optical fiber. This technology makes it possible to achieve very impressive speeds with the Livebox 7:

    • Up to 5 Gbits/s in download speed and 1 Gbit/s in uplink speed for individuals (i.e. a gain of 3 Gbits/s in download and 200 Mbits/s in sending compared to what the Livebox 6 offers);
    • Up to 8 Gbits/s downstream and 2 Gbits/s upstream for professionals.

    The Livebox 7 also has:

    • 1 10 Gbps port
    • 4 1Gbps ports

The drawback of XGS-PON technology, because there is one, is that it is still far from being available everywhere. Orange is nevertheless committed to covering 40% of the population by 2024. Rather promising, on paper.

Note that like its big sister the Livebox 6, the new Livebox 7 is equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, which offers an optimized connection with better latency. Several devices can in fact be simultaneously connected to the box, on one of the three available frequencies. Very practical if you are used to videoconferencing, downloading or gaming.

Who will be able to benefit from Livebox 7, and at what prices?

These are two questions that, we know, have been bothering you since discovering our article. Concretely, only one offer will allow you to take possession of a Livebox 7: the Livebox Max Fiber offer. Bad luck, it’s Orange’s most expensive subscription, because it represents the top of the operator’s basket. So, how much for the new Max Fiber offer?

    • The subscription is sold at 33.99 euros per month for 6 months, before dropping to 57.99 euros per month for new customers.

Orange is therefore taking advantage of the launch of Livebox 7 to increase its Max Fiber offer by 2 euros (currently at 53.99 euros per month). But the promotional period cost a little more (37.99 euros per month), even if it stretched over 12 months.

Several services are associated with the Livebox Max Fiber offer:

    • Wi-Fi Sérénité support, allowing you to benefit from 1 to 3 Wi-Fi repeaters which will cost the subscriber nothing, except an activation fee of 10 euros. Note that Orange tells us that 1 in 2 Max offer customers now have at least one repeater at home. This technology is gaining more and more fans, therefore.
    • Possibility of a 4G Airbox.
    • The Orange Security Suite and access to Stop Pub, which allows you to better combat cold calling and scams (a paid option on other Orange offers).

A designer box tinged with eco-design

This Livebox 7 looks exactly like version 6. Still designed by Sagemcom and assembled in Tunisia, it is a little heavier than its big sister and remains optimized for better signal diffusion.

With this box, Orange demonstrates its commitment to sustainability by obtaining “Footprint Progress” certification from Bureau Veritas. This attests to an eco-designed product, with a 100% recycled and recyclable shell, and a sleep mode (already present on the Livebox 6) which reduces energy consumption.

? Also new on the Livebox Fiber Up offer: Livebox 6 is coming!

Orange has not forgotten its Livebox Up Fiber customers. Restricted to Livebox 5 if they benefit from fiber, or to 4 if they only have access to ADSL, they will now be able to claim to equip themselves with Livebox 6 with Wi-Fi 6E. A desire to “ democratize Wi-Fi 6E » from Orange, whose feedback “ both technical and from subscribers are extremely positive », Tells us Laetitia Orsini Sharps about this technology.

    • The Livebox Up Fiber offer therefore goes from 32.99 to 33.99 euros per month for 6 months (instead of 12 until now), then to 51.99 euros per month instead of 50.99 euros. beyond the initial period.
