(CercleFinance.com) – Lockheed Martin announces that its Sikorsky company has delivered a CH-53K helicopter to the United States Marine Corps, ahead of the contractual schedule, as part of an LRIP production (Low-Rate Initial Production ) or the initial production phase, in small quantities.
The aircraft, the 7th delivered to the Marines, will be stationed at the base in Jacksonville, North Carolina. It should be joined by two other CH-53Ks before the end of the year.
The heavy-lift capabilities of the CH-53K, an aircraft built at Sikorsky’s Digital Factory, exceeds all other US Department of Defense rotary-wing platforms, the manufacturer assures.
It is also the “only heavy transport helicopter whose production is planned until 2023 and beyond”, continues Lockheed Martin.
Lockheed says Connecticut’s high-tech production line is still active with seven more aircraft under construction on final assembly, as the plant has foreign military sales commitments.
Earlier this year, Sikorsky won a contract to build 12 CH-53K heavy-lift helicopters for Israel, with first deliveries scheduled for 2025.
