Loire: a baby found alive in a trash can

A newborn was found alive in a trash can in Montbrison (Loire), Friday March 11, we learned from concordant sources. His mother later surrendered to the gendarmes.

The discovery of the child was made shortly before 11 a.m. on Friday.

According to information from the daily Le Progrès, a postwoman who was doing her rounds in the city center was alerted by cries coming from a trash can installed in the public space.

When she imagined finding a kitten, she discovered a baby there, a little boy just a few hours old, in a folded plastic bag. The infant was transported by the firefighters and the SMUR to the Forez hospital center.

An open investigation

“His vital prognosis is not engaged,” reassured AFP the public prosecutor of Saint-Etienne, David Charmatz. The 20-year-old mother of the child was taken into custody after giving herself up to authorities.

Taken to the hospital for treatment, she had not yet been heard by the investigators at the start of the evening, according to the gendarmerie.

Initially, an investigation for “abandonment of a minor under 15” had been opened. The latter was reclassified as “attempted murder of a minor under the age of 15” by the Saint-Etienne prosecutor’s office.
