LoL: Hwei, new champion – Spells, lore, gameplay, all the info

He is ready to paint to get out of any situation: it is Hwei, the new champion of League of Legends. The last champion of the year 2023, he is a human mage who wants to be completely generic, while being artistic, but extremely versatile. His kit is entirely focused on choosing his skills based on situations, which should provide a champion that is significantly more complicated to handle than recent releases. Spells, gameplay, lore, here is everything you need to know about Hwei, the new LoL champion.

Release date : Hwei is scheduled for patch 13.24, arriving on December 7 on live servers

Roles : Hwei is a mage, designed to go midlane

Hwei’s Passive Skill and Spells

Hwei is a visionary painter who can cast 10 different spells. Each spell first chooses a subject, defining its type. This then replaces Hwei’s spells with the various options from the respective spell book. The 3 subjects are:

  • [A] Disaster – Damage
  • [Z] Serenity – Utility
  • [E] Torment – Control

Cooldowns are linked to spellbooks and not to the spells themselves.

Full spell videos and translations will arrive as soon as they are available. In the meantime, you can check out the SkinSpotlights video which shows the champion in action.

Passive: Signature of the Visionary

Hwei’s skills that deal damage to enemy champions mark them for a few seconds. Damaging champions marked with another skill creates an explosion beneath them, detonating after a brief delay and dealing magic damage to all enemies in the area.

AA – Devastating Fire

Hwei paints a flaming ball of fire that flies towards his target. The fireball explodes on contact with the first enemy or at its maximum range, dealing magic damage plus a percentage of the max HP of all enemies in the area as magic damage.

AZ – Severing Bolt

Hwei paints a devastating long-range lightning bolt at his target’s location. After a brief delay, the lightning strikes, dealing magic damage. Immobilized or isolated enemies take additional damage based on their missing HP.

AE – Molten Fissure

Hwei paints an area of volcanic explosion, creating lava in its path. Each eruption deals magic damage to enemies hit. Enemies in the path of lava are slowed and take magic damage every second.

ZA – Fleeting Current

Hwei paints a rapid stream of water in front of him for a short time, which grants him and his team movement speed.

ZZ – Pool of Reflection

Hwei forms a protective pool under his target, which remains for a few seconds. Allied champions in the area immediately gain a shield, which increases with time spent inside.

ZE – Stirring Lights

Hwei paints three swirling lights that spin around him for a few seconds. His next 3 attacks or skills deal bonus damage and regenerate mana on hit.

EQ – Grim Face

Hwei casts a terrifying face that hits the first enemy hit, dealing magic damage and causing them to flee for a brief moment.

EZ – Gaze of the Abyss

Hwei paints an Abyssal Eye at his target’s location that reveals the area and locks onto the nearest visible enemy champion. After a brief delay, the eye fires at the locked champion, stopping the first enemy in its path and dealing magic damage.

EE – Crushing Maw

Hwei paints a jaw that deals magic damage to enemies hit and pulls them back towards its center, slowing them.

R – Spiraling Despair

Hwei casts a vision of pure despair that attaches for a few seconds to the first champion hit. The vision expands and encompasses all enemies it hits, dealing magic damage every second. Enemies in the area suffer Despair over time. Each stack of Despair applies a slow. Once complete, the vision explodes, dealing magic damage.

Some information about Hwei

Using Hwei’s spells is quite simple. You must first press one of the keys to choose the main type of the spell (Damage, Utility, Control), then press a second time to choose which type to combine it with. Which therefore offers 9 spells to choose from, plus its ultimate. Choosing the right combination in the heat of battle is another story.

The concept of Hwei has been in the works for a long time at Riot Games. It’s been years since we’ve heard developers talk about a mage focused on drawing, but no satisfactory design has been found. Ultimately, the developers started from scratch to create a champion who combines his paints to have an arsenal of 10 spells at his disposal.

After much simpler champions (Milio, Briar), the teams voluntarily offer a more complex design to handle. The idea is to satisfy as many people as possible and those looking for a bit of challenge.

Hwei is originally from Ionia, and obviously crossed paths with Jhin. It was he who awakened the artistic side of the mage, after inflicting a crushing defeat on him.
