Anyone interested in League of Legends lore has already read about the war between Ionia and Noxus. Many champions have been affected by it, such as Irelia, Swain, Riven, Akali, Sion, and many others. After several years of war, Ionia succeeded in repelling the Noxian forces, without a clear winner being established. However, a silly question remains unanswered. Why did Noxus want to invade Ionia?
A difficult region
Ionia is a dangerous land. Its inhabitants try somehow to maintain the balance between the material world and the spiritual world. Besides humans, other dangerous species live there. The first that come to mind are the Vastayas (Xayah, Ahri, Wukong etc) but also other potentially dangerous intelligent living beings (Lillia, Ivern). In addition to its latest, demon invasions regularly take place on site. These are not massive invasions, but they are harmful enough that a special order has been created to contain them: the Kinkou.
The region is not known to be particularly fertile (it is not desert either, but is covered with mountains) and does not seem to have specific natural resources. Noxus could very well have chosen to expand on the continent, to reach the borders of Demacia (there is a large strip of neutral land between the two kingdoms), or to turn its attention to the city-state of Piltover, known for its Technological innovations. Finally, despite being made up of several islands, Ionia does not have a specially developed navy unlike Bilgewater.
Possible reasons
The most down-to-earth reason would be to believe that Noxus wishes to make this island an important maritime base. In the event of an attack from the sea, they would then have a second base to take the enemy from behind, or at least force the potential opponent to divide his forces on two fronts. However, this theory is very unlikely. Noxus already has a very large swath of sea land, and it seems almost impossible that an opposing nation could organize a maritime blockade simultaneously on all the coasts of Noxus.
The most likely reason is also quite mysterious. This invasion could have been dictated by Mordekaiser. Before being chained by the sect of the Black Rose led by Leblanc, he intended to take over the world. Mastering an unholy magic allowing him to pass into the Realm of the Dead, it could be that the Ionia region allows him to increase his power, because of the thinner borders between the material and spiritual worlds. The sect might have seen this as an opportunity to strengthen their esoteric powers. Or simply, the former leader of Noxus Boram Darkwill who saw his end approaching, could have wished to appropriate Ionia in the hope of discovering a way to prolong its existence. This ultimately only hastened his end, as he was later overthrown by a vengeful Swain after the betrayal suffered on the battlefield, which resulted in the creation of a triumvirate.
Swain acquired a demon during the betrayal of his former ruler. The latter made him more powerful, but it has never been conclusively proven that the general actually has control of Raum and not the other way around. The plans of the two beings are not known, other than to reform Noxus (which has been in progress for at least 7 years, according to the news).
