LoL: Rammus, the real winner of the new League of Legends patch

Every League of Legends patch is a chance for the least loved and least used champions in the meta to get a little more love. Sometimes a tiny tweak is enough to get fans of the title interested in a particular character, but other times it takes a major skill tweak.

This is the case of Rammus. The Armored Armadillo in LoL is a rather niche character, meaning it is used by very few players. Despite his recent upgrades, like the arrival of his new R – Rising Strike a few months ago, he’s still a pretty underutilized character.. This issue will be addressed by Riot Games, who are already planning a major champion change for patch 12.20, which just landed on the test server, the PBE.

All changes to Rammus with patch 12.20

W – Defensive Ball

The slow Rammus suffered when using this ability has been removed.

R – Rising Strike

Movement speed increased from 105% to 110% of Rammus’ base movement speed.

There are two adjustments, but the most important is the first. Not that you wouldn’t appreciate Rammus’ jump being a bit more powerful, but you’ll only use it a handful of times in a game. This is why a skill with a much more basic cooldown ends up being a much more relevant fit for the champion.

Rammus’ W is a skill that increases the champion’s defensive abilities and reflects a portion of the damage taken from basic attacks. This is a powerful ability due to its uniqueness and suitability for auto-attack based teams. But where it really shines is with E – Frenzied Taunt, which causes the opponent to hit it for a few seconds.

A more versatile armadillo

This isn’t so much because of the synergy between the two abilities, but because Rammus is slowed by 30% when using his W. This means opponents can dodge him for a second. This allows opponents to avoid it quite easily, making it one of the character’s weaknesses. This problem will therefore be resolved with the next patch.

Thanks to the change proposed by Riot Games, it is no longer that Rammus has more versatility when it comes to applying the combo, especially against melee opponents who previously had to get close to him to start hitting. The real change is that Rammus’ W can now be used as a defensive escape tool, which the slow was preventing.

After a patch 12.19 full of very interesting adjustments, this new version will follow in the footsteps of the previous one by bringing changes that focus on nerfing some of the strongest champions in SoloQ in recent weeks.
