LoL: The day Riot Games interviewed the most forgotten champion of lore

League of Legends has not always had an abundant lore, as rich in stories as in illustration, with a real narrative landscape. A few terse champion tales, a somewhat crude backdrop — in the early hours of the game, players had little to sink their teeth into. But things have changed a lot, because Riot Games has put heart into the work, connecting the different characters through interactions or more generally by weaving them diverse and varied relationships. Today, each new champion has a real narrative framework that places him at the heart of a story that is larger than his personal story, while highlighting his objectives, his motivations, his direction.

On the other hand, there is a champion who, in this respect, seems deeply neglected. Beyond a vague biography, we don’t know much about him. This is all the more true since he does not interact with anyone and has no relationship. In other words, it’s a UFO that evolves in League of Legends as a great solitaire.

Who ? Shaco, the Jester of Darkness, one of the Rift’s most mysterious champions — and has been since its release in October 2009.

Union minimum

Accustomed to the legions of paragraphs recounting the origins of the last champions to join the Rift, we open our eyes wide open in front of the incomplete biography of the Jester of Darkness, because it comes down to 202 words — a figure so poor that it is barely sufficient to understand who he is. However, there are worse since the bio of Twitch, it has only 66 miserable words. There is however a crucial difference between the two champions since Zaun’s rat, on the other hand, has a story unlike the jester.

The very concept of Shaco’s story is that he doesn’t really have one. The biography is extremely evasive, avoiding details like the plague and leaving the door open to an insane amount of theory.

Difficult to remember all the details in more than 10 years, but his lore and biography have apparently been changed several times since the game’s debut. We can still learn that he was made a long time ago to serve as a toy for a prince who felt alone, Shaco is an enchanted puppet who now feeds on murder and chaos. Corrupted by dark magic and the loss of his cherished mission, the once kind puppet now rejoices only in the misfortune of the souls he torments.

However, during an interview with the developer, we can learn a little more about him…

A special interview

Riot’s interview with Shaco was published in Issue XIII of Volume 1 of the forgotten Journal of Justice, a newspaper-style publication that Riot had for over 10 years. The goal was to tell stories complementary to the biographies and individual stories of each character in the game, so that the lore would be expanded and players would also be interested in the historical side of LoL.

RAM

Thank you for agreeing to this Shaco interview. It’s an honor.

Shaco

RAM

OK then. Let’s start with what everyone wants to know. Where are you from ?

Shaco

I am not of this world. Your summoners summoned me from a shadow world, a place that makes your Runeterra look like a kid’s birthday party. Isn’t that one of the stories? Or maybe I’m just an assassin gone wrong, wandering Runeterra and playing my murderous jokes on those most assured of receiving the fall. This is another exciting account of my origins.

RAM

There are those who believe that you are the manifestation of the dark urges of humanity. In today’s Runeterra, this is not entirely inconceivable. What do you have to answer that ?

Shaco

Would you like me to be? Would it make you feel better about the part of you that shivers at the lives I end? [pause] Like a magician, I never reveal my secrets.

RAM

Could you tell us how was your childhood?

Shaco

I am still a child. On the inside. Do not you see it ? I like to play.

RAM

Your name is an anagram of ‘chaos’. Is it intentional?

Shaco

A Shaco with any other name would always draw blood. Intentional or not, it sticks, right?

RAM

There are people who look up to you as a role model. What do you think about this ?

Shaco

I don’t like competition.

[Une cinquième entaille est gravée.]

RAM

You seem to have developed a clientele with the ladies. How has this changed your life?

Shaco

I am a contract killer. You could say I go both ways.

RAM

You certainly have your own sharp sense of humor. What’s your favorite joke right now?

Shaco

What do people and books have in common? Wherever they are open they are red.

[Shaco glousse et sculpte une septième entaille.]

RAM

Your enigmatic nature is part of your appeal to many people. However, do you have a great adventure that you could share?

Shaco

Once upon a time, there was an extravagant nobleman who dwelt in the city-state of Noxus. He was a miserable man, the kind of person who had done almost every sneaky thing you can think of. However, he was a forgiving husband and father. He was someone who enjoyed a good fall, so it was obvious he needed my “Killing Joke”. First, I tickled the humor-sensitive side of his wife. She burst out laughing. Then I took her eldest son for a ride. He liked it so much that he never wanted to leave. Then, I delivered surprise music boxes as gifts to her youngest daughter and her toddler son. “Pop!” the Shaco said, lovingly finding his way deep into their hearts. The nobleman himself? No joy for him. However, he certainly understood the fall.

Shaco

He tried to play the seesaw with his own neck.

Ram bouge inconfortablement.]

There are two left [questions]. They better be good.

RAM

The legal gray areas that surround League of Legends have given you the ability to act openly and even become a celebrity. However, you are wanted for murder by authorities in almost every city-state in Runeterra. How do you reconcile these two seemingly opposite lifestyles?

Shaco

[Une menace grandit dans ses yeux]

I don’t like authorities and I don’t think I like this question.

RAM

Hmm… ok… let’s continue. Last question, then. It is claimed that a high-ranking member of the League has established a relationship with you and that you have been seen together on several occasions. Can you confirm or deny this?

Shaco

[Shaco regarde fixement.

Why be so serious?

The interview doesn’t really end like this, but in a… tragic way: “Ram Steed was found two blocks from where he conducted this interview. He had been stabbed multiple times, the stiletto protruding from his chest with a note that read, ‘An eye inside Ram Steed. “He was immediately transported to the nearest healer. Given the severity of his injuries, he has not yet regained consciousness and may not. Our thoughts are with him.”

After this brief interview, one thing is certain, Shaco is a real psychopath. Riot still hasn’t redeveloped the champion’s lore at this time, but we hope that one day the studio will do so to finally give a little more depth to one of the Rift’s most mysterious characters. of the summoner.

It’s tradition, at each League of Legends World Championship, its own dedicated skin! And this year, it is the terrible emperor of the sands, Azir, who has been chosen by Riot Games!
