Nicknames in League of Legends are an integral part of player identity. While some lack inspiration and take their surname, others dig a little deeper. At Worlds 2022, we spotted several masterclasses. As the competition draws closer and many heated debates are to be expected, we have decided to offer you something to shine in society: our selection of 5 nicknames with the best history.

Felix “Abbedagge” Braun (100 Thieves): a reference to a great classic

Our selection starts with a well-known player in Europe: the German midlaner Abbedagge. If he moved to North America by joining 100 Thieves, he made himself known in the LEC on the side of Schalke 04. Nicknamed “Fakerdagge”, in reference to Faker, by the community because of its big mechanics, it however has a story of its own to explain the origin of its pseudonym… You have to delve into a video game classic to find the reference: Age of Empire I (released in 1997).

The youngest may not have known this little marvel of strategic play. By choosing your civilization (the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Persians…), you had to build your empire and crush the competition, by making your people evolve through the ages. Players had to control their units (villagers, warriors, etc.) to perform specific actions. And the 100 Thieves player totally flashed on a voiceline used by the villagers: “Abedagge“. The spelling is approximate and the sound is incomprehensible, but that was enough to convince the German. For the record, he could have come across other nicknames like “Danahi”, “Erictus” or “Oklama”. .. Life can really be played out in small details.

Andrei “Odoamne” Pascu (Rogue): an OMG nickname

Need a Romanian lesson?

League of Legends fans have learned over time to love Odoamne. Rogue’s toplaner has passed through many European teams (H2K, Splyce, Schalke 04…) and it has always shown incredible solidity. But despite his work and his efforts, he still lacked a little something to lift the title… But that was before, since the Romanian was finally crowned European champion this summer with Rogue. The emotion was clearly visible on his face after the victory. Mixing rage, happiness and relief, he almost made more than one in the audience cry.

Odo can be proud of his career and his journey. He does not forget what he has been through and where he comes from and his pseudonym pays homage to his mother tongue. There are not a lot of Romanian players in the LEC, and we imagine that he is the hero of a whole people. Odoamne is actually cut into “Oh, Domain !” which means in Romanian “Oh my God!”. It would be more complicated for a Frenchman, an Englishman or a Spaniard to use this technique, but in Romanian, it passes cream!

Sergen “Broken Blade” Çelik (G2) and Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon (DRX): good graphics card eaters

League of Legends is a game that takes you to the guts and if this is true for an amateur player, we imagine that it is even more advanced among pro players. As you might expect, several players have therefore chosen their nickname by referring to the MOBA. It’s more or less successful depending on the case, but among the competitors present Worlds 2022, there are two who were very inspired:

  • Broken Blade : the toplaner is a big fan of Riven and it is with this champion that he made himself known. If we take a little interest in the lore of the character, we learn that it is a “broken blade“, who once fought for Noxus before defecting and living in a land she was originally meant to invade. Unfortunately for BB, Riven is an easier champion to take out in soloQ than in official competition.
  • pyosik ; in Korean pyosik (표식) means mark. And the jungler is a big fan of Kindred, a champion who collects marks during the game to improve his skills and his statistics. Like a hunter, he marks his enemies before taking them down. The champion is not always very meta, but he still released it 18 times among the pros so far (56% winrate).

Philippe “Vulcan” Laflamme (EG): a pseudonym that makes sense

This is not the first time that the pseudonym of Vulcan, in particular because he will experience his 3rd Worlds with his 3rd team this year. But the origin of his name is a real masterclass and we couldn’t make a selection without mentioning it… Above all, you have to know that the player is from Quebec and that he speaks as well English that French, with a slight accent. Its in-game name refers to this duality. “Vulcan” is the Roman god of fire, volcanoes and the forge. It’s a bit like the Greek god Hephaestus. And since the player’s last name is Laflamme… the connection is quite natural.

Ian Victor “FBI” Huang: a not so obvious origin

League of Legends

To finish our selection, we decided to go to Australia with the ADC FBI. This one wears the colors of 100 Thieves and his nickname is a bit tricky. The vast majority of the community makes a natural connection with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the omnipresent American anti-terrorism and counterintelligence agency in American series. One could therefore have imagined that the Australian dreamed of being a younger spy or sniper. But in reality, FBI is a graphics card eater like the others. His nickname refers to the cyber-café chain FBI Gaming. There are 4 in Sydney (Townhall, Burwood, Chatswood and Waterloo) and the FBI spent a lot of time there in his youth… Worlds ! We hope that the cyber-café pays him a small commission for the free advertising.

League of Legends Worlds hasn’t started yet, but the transfer window is already brewing! Late in the night, Wooloo dropped a real bomb… Rekkles would be leaving for Karmine Corp and a top player is expected to replace him.
