Long waiting times – holidays soon over – cars were backed up up to 13 kilometers – news

  • As on Saturday, traffic was backed up at the Gotthard south portal on Sunday.
  • In the early afternoon, the cars between Faido and Airolo in Ticino were in a column of ten kilometers, meanwhile it’s about four kilometers.

That meant a loss of time of 40 minutes, as the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) announced in the short message service Twitter.

On Saturday, the traffic jam had grown to a length of 13 kilometers with a time loss of 2.5 hours. As early as Friday morning, the volume of traffic on the Gotthard led to traffic congestion between Quinto and Airolo in front of the Gotthard south portal.

School holidays are coming to an end

In 15 cantons, especially in German-speaking Switzerland, the school holidays end at the weekend. Accordingly, many travelers are on their way back from the south.

The TCS had warned of traffic jams in front of the Gotthard tunnel on the A2 and also on the San Bernardino route for all weekends in August. In some French-speaking and German-speaking cantons, the summer holidays last until August 22nd and in Ticino until August 29th.
