Love and Thunder”, the gods have become puppets

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – WE CAN AVOID

Thor: Ragnarok (2017), the third and previous installment of the adventures of Thor, had received such a humorous treatment that the god of thunder and the franchise came out of it all invigorated. Well inspired responsible for this breath of fresh air, the New Zealand director Taika Waititi (Vampires in privacyin 2014 ; jojo rabbitin 2019) – who succeeded Kenneth Branagh (Thor, in 2011) and Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark Worldin 2013) – took over the controls to direct this fourth opus. The followers of the Space Viking were waiting for it. Here he comes out, physically (almost) intact – build with a pickaxe, blond hair and blue eyes. The public has already responded.

Released on Friday July 8 in the United States, the film immediately imposed itself at the box office, offering, in one weekend, Marvel studios the best start of its saga, with 143 million dollars (143 million euros). euros) of revenue accumulated in three days. In France, success also seems to be off to a good start, if we are to believe the figures collected on Wednesday 13, during its first day of operation. From a commercial point of view, it is therefore a winning return. We will not say as much, alas, of the film itself, crazy, weakly directed, abandoned with a humor of the playground, an approximate narration, grimacing and oversimplified superheroes. The gods, this time, are no longer amusing and their agitation is painful to see.

Overweight and depression

It is moreover a Thor (Chris Hemsworth) put away from the battles, suffering from overweight and a slight depression that we find at the beginning of the film. In short, an ordinary man who, in his little fishing village as artificial as a Disneyland setting, tries to find his inner “self” by trying to regain his health and his figure. In reality, Thor is going around in circles. The story also, which for a long time accumulates episodes devoid of the slightest interest, wanders like a headless being looking for a possible exit. This one, at the end of a heavy boredom, ends up happening in the person of Gorr (Christian Bale), poor wretch looking like an evil specter, who has decided, for revenge, to kill all the gods. And to show his determination, began by kidnapping children before, he threatens, to massacre them.

The fights are constantly thwarted (more than interspersed) by caricatural sentimental scenes and pathetic comic parentheses
