Michel Barnier, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke of the role that his political formation of the Republicans will adopt during the five-year term of Emmanuel Macron, while the cabinet reshuffle is due to take place on Monday morning. The group will make “proposals”, and reserves the right not to vote on the purchasing power law.

The Republicans at the time of “ni-ni”. Before the announcement of the cabinet reshuffle, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Michel Barnier was the guest ofEurope Morning. At the microphone of Sonia Mabrouk, he specified that the LR group, which has 62 deputies in the National Assembly, will be “in an attitude of firmness and construction of the solutions that the French need, neither allegiance nor obstruction”, a- he said Monday morning on Europe 1.

Olivier Marleix, the president of the LR group in the Assembly, sent a two-page letter to Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne with specific proposals. It is this method that will prevail in the National Assembly and the Senate, assures Michel Barnier. “We will be in the proposal, not in the obstruction, and that is what is expected of us if we want to be faithful to our voters and respectful of their choices”, he explained. The Republicans have proposed to the government a price per liter of gasoline around 1.50 euros, or even lower charges to increase wages within the framework of the purchasing power bill.

The government must move “from a culture of arrogance to compromise”

Will the deputies then vote for the government project? “It is the group itself, in responsibility, which will say where the balance is in relation to what we are asking for, which is not 100% take it or leave it. But the government will have to be in a constructive attitude too,” he said.

“The government must move from a culture of arrogance to a culture of compromise,” he added, noting that LR will remain in opposition even if certain personalities could be tempted to join the government. “Our group is in a key position. And if we combine the strength of our group with the Senate where it has a majority, then we have a real lever for the change and the alternation that our country needs.”
