Lucien Jean-Baptiste: this ambitious and very personal project that he still intends to carry out

In La Traversée, in theaters since June 29, he plays an educator stuck in the open sea with young school dropouts and an ex-cop from the BAC.

What made you want to board this boat?

Lucien Jean-Baptiste: I’m a guy from the islands and I’m going to move to Vendée, sailing knows me! More seriously, the strength of this film is not to convey clichés about cops and young people from the estates and not to make them confront each other. There, they find themselves in the middle of the Mediterranean for a fifteen-day trip on a boat, and they must move forward together. It is a film about communication and reconciliation. These values are close to my heart.

Specialized educator, is this a profession that you could have practiced?

Sure ! I was a summer camp monitor when I was young. I took a lot of kids to the mountains. I often speak with educators in sensitive neighborhoods. They admit to giving up, for lack of means and because times have become tougher. We get the impression that in high places, there is a desire to let these young people sink into crisis situations. I think it’s terrible! But as the film tells us, we must not lose hope. We must continue to dialogue.

What about your film project about your childhood in the suburbs in the 1970s?

It is still under construction. I wanted to talk about this generation that I call “the first”. We came from afar, with a different skin color. Of course, we were confronted with racism but we had in mind that our parents had sacrificed themselves so that we could have a better life. We were full of hope even if the institutions held us back by telling us to stay in our place.
