According to a US media report, the United States and its allies believe that massive missile or drone attacks by Iran or its proxies on military and state targets in Israel are imminent. Fears of a new war in the Middle East have been simmering since an attack on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus. The attack killed two brigadier generals and five other members of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Tehran accuses Israel of being responsible for the attack.
Iran’s head of state had already threatened retaliation. “The evil regime will be punished by our brave men. We will make them repent for this and similar crimes, God willing,” Ali Khamenei said, according to a statement. Whether a potential attack on Israel by Iran or its proxies would turn the conflict into a broader, longer-lasting war is not yet clear, one of the Bloomberg sources said.
“No Israeli embassy is safe
An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader had also warned that Israeli embassies around the world could become targets of retaliatory attacks. “The (anti-Israel) Resistance Front is ready for all possible retaliation scenarios and no Israeli embassy around the world is safe from them,” said former Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRCG) commander General Jajhja Rahim-Safawi, according to state broadcaster Al-Alam.
Israel is considered the archenemy of the Iranian government. Since the beginning of the Gaza war, the conflict has worsened. Israel’s air force repeatedly bombs targets in neighboring Syria in an attempt to prevent Iran and its allied militias, such as the Lebanese Hezbollah, from expanding their military influence in the country.
Lufthansa is canceling flights to Tehran due to the tense situation. “Due to the current situation in the Middle East, Lufthansa has decided, after careful evaluation, to suspend flights to and from Tehran until Thursday, April 11, 2024,” explains a company spokesman. “We are constantly monitoring the situation in the Middle East and are in close contact with the authorities. The safety of our guests and crew members is Lufthansa’s top priority.”
