Bushman: Strip criminal clans of their status symbols

The debate on action against criminal clans is picking up speed again after incidents in North Rhine-Westphalia. Justice Minister Buschmann calls for tougher action and unconventional measures.
Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann has called for tougher action against clan crime in Germany. “The penalties already give a lot. But we also have to fight specific crimes by the clans in an unconventional way,” said FDP politician Buschmann of the “Bild” newspaper. As an example, he cited confiscating “the status symbols of clan members after crimes, such as their luxury cars, expensive jewelry and watches.” The rule of law must show “that it has teeth”.
The funds for this are in the hands of the federal states, said the FDP politician. If the pressure increased, the clans would back down too. “The police need less capacity at the desks, but even more on the street,” the justice minister told the newspaper.
From the point of view of the FDP politician, clan members with a migration background should be deported more quickly in the future. “I’m in favor of our deportation capacities in the federal states being used primarily for criminals and dangerous people,” said Buschmann. “It’s grotesque that some people with permanent jobs are deported – and on the other hand the deportation of criminals fails. We have to get better at that.”
The debate had recently picked up speed again after multiple arguments between two large families in North Rhine-Westphalia. Mass brawls broke out in Essen and Castrop-Rauxel. There were injuries, and a large number of cutting and thrusting weapons were secured.
For several years, the police in North Rhine-Westphalia have been taking targeted action against criminal family clans. In April 2022, the fourth situation report on clan crime was presented. After that, the statistically recorded clan crime in North Rhine-Westphalia declined. The Ruhr area is still considered the main area of action for the clan criminals. Most crimes were recorded in Essen in 2021, followed by Recklinghausen, Gelsenkirchen, Duisburg and Bochum.
