Since Apple released the macOS Sonoma 14.4 update earlier this month, many users have reported numerous bugs, ranging from disappearing connection with printers and hubs to iCloud destroying backed-up versions of files Drive.
The list of reported bugs is long and varied, and includes the following:
- Printers – especially HP printers accessed over networks – disappear from the computer due to missing printer drivers.
- Connectivity issues with USB hubs and display ports.
- Problem with Java.
- DRM iLok License Manager fails, blocking access to protected software.
- iCloud Drive erases previous versions of files for users who have Optimize Storage on Mac enabled.
- Various reports of crashes and system instability.
Security or printer?
It is important to note that we do not yet have a clear idea of the extent of these problems. Comments on support forums and social media suggest that it’s the printer issue that’s causing the most trouble for Mac owners who have upgraded.
iLok DRM issues affect users of audio plugins protected by this technology, but this is a fairly small and specialized segment of Mac users.
The downside to delaying the update because of these bugs is that this update fixes a long list of security issues, 64 in total, including at least two that Apple says may have already been exploited by hackers .
In short, Apple is really putting us in a bind.
