Like every year in the fall, Apple updates the operating system of its MacBooks. And as announced a few months earlier, macOS Monterey will give way to Ventura, starting today.

Which macs are compatible?

As a reminder, only macs released in 2017 or later will be able to take advantage of the update, but here is a detailed list of compatible models:

  • iMac (2017 and later models)
  • iMac Pro 2017
  • MacBook Air (2018 and later models)
  • MacBook Pro (2017 and later models)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later models)
  • Mac mini (2018 and later models)
  • MacBook (2017 and later models)

MacOS, iOS and iPadOS are getting closer, in particular via the Stage Manager

In order to bring more consistency to its various devices, Apple has modified its menus under macOS, in particular its system preferences, which will take the form of a column on the left of the screen, a list which recalls the interface of iPhones. . One of the key features of Ventura will be the integration of the Stage Manager, which is also launched under iPadOS 16 and which will make it possible to better manage its open applications.

We will see previews (six at most for the moment) displayed on the left of the screen with the last applications used. At the same time, it will be possible to create groups or to see the different tabs open within the same application, in Safari for example. The idea being to simplify and streamline the navigation from one application to another and to improve the workflow.

Internship Manager

Mail and Spotlight

Above all, it will be necessary to expect aesthetic modifications on the side of Spotlight. The search application will be improved, with a larger interface and the ability to display user images directly. Mail should for its part integrate some more advanced functionalities such as the automatic corrector, the cancellation of a sending (within ten seconds), as well as the programming of a sending, and finally a more efficient search which will be able to find files or links received or sent, for example.

Continuity Camera

What better way to replace your webcam than an iPhone? This will now be possible using a dedicated support to be fixed on your Mac, to enjoy a much better quality video experience. It will also be possible to make a Face Time call from your iPhone directly to your Mac without hanging up, which will make the exchanges more fluid, even if it remains very situational, it must be admitted.

You can use your iPhone as a high quality webcam.

Passkeys, for a world without passwords?

If Apple had mentioned Passkeys at WWDC, this technology should be talked about again, unless its development is not quite ready yet. Common to Apple, Microsoft and Google, it has only recently been supported by Android devices and made available to developers, although it is not yet available to the general public. This type of authentication will allow you to identify yourself on certain online services, applications or websites directly using the biometric tools of your phone (fingerprint sensor and FaceID) without having to type in a password. More secure and relatively easy to use, this system could eventually completely replace passwords which have the disadvantage of being often too obvious, sometimes tedious to write and which can be easily lost or forgotten.

While waiting for our handling of macOS Ventura, you can install it as soon as your computer offers it, potentially on the evening of October 24. However, we recommend that you wait a few weeks or even a few months, the time for the usual batch of bugs to be corrected and for everything to work perfectly smoothly.
