Real Madrid got off to a perfect start to the season. Can the “Royal” master the tricky task with their city rivals?

6 games, 6 wins, 11:3 goals – Real Madrid has not been able to harm anyone since the start of the season on August 12th. Even if it only worked in stoppage time in the Champions League against Union Berlin on Wednesday.

On Sunday in the domestic league, however, the strongest opponent so far is likely to await Ancelotti’s team. Real are visiting city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The 20-year-old Englishman scored 6 of Real’s 11 goals, including the goal against Union Berlin. “He is smarter than others when it comes to attacks from the second row,” says coach Carlo Ancelotti, praising his newcomer from Dortmund, who is ready to play after his stomach problems have subsided.

As for Atletico’s attack, Simeone is hoping for the return of Memphis Depay and midfielder Koke (at least as a “joker”), while Pablo Barrios, the goalscorer against Lazio, is out. At Real, Dani Carvajal and presumably Vinicius Junior will have to miss out.

Atletico: Red alert and the fans waiting

The recent past speaks for Real Madrid. The runner-up didn’t lose any of their three games against Atletico last season (2:1, 1:1 in the league, 3:1 aet in the cup). Every time an Atletico player was thrown off the pitch. But Simeone isn’t worried: Alberola Rojas is a great referee. And anyway: “We just concentrate on the game.”

A small plus point for Atletico: The home fans are likely to be particularly hot on Sunday. Of course because of the opponent. But also because they had to wait 41 days for their performance at the Wanda Metropolitano. There were 4 away games in between.
