In “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper is the conductor in front of and behind the camera of the Leonard Bernstein biopic.
Like every year, the end of the year marks the season for event films on Netflix. Thus, Maestro, performed, co-written and directed by Bradley Cooper, is part of this prestigious line-up. It tells the story of composer Leonard Bernstein, and will be available on Netflix on December 20 from 9:00 a.m.
The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and already appears to be a favorite in the awards race. It tells the complex love story between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carey Mulligan) – a story that spans more than 30 years. Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman, Josh Hamilton, Scott Ellis, Gideon Glick, Sam Nivola, Alexa Swinton and Miriam Shor complete the cast.
Rather than a classic biopic, Maestro presents itself as a melodrama and a fresco about the love story between the famous conductor / composer and his wife. Perhaps best known for his score on West Side Story, Bernstein married actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn in 1951 and had three children with her, with the couple dividing their time between New York and Connecticut. The affairs he had over the years with both men and women, even if they were carried out with Felicia’s consent, complicated the couple’s relationship.
Bradley Cooper wrote the screenplay for Maestro with Josh Singer, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Spotlight, with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as producers.
