Labor victory keeps Berlin at the top of the table

SC Magdeburg is marching confidently through this season of the handball Bundesliga. The Füchse Berlin have to step up their game to keep their chance of winning the championship – and they are having a hard time. But they have the world handball player in their ranks.

The top duo Füchse Berlin and SC Magdeburg have completed their mandatory tasks in the handball Bundesliga. While the Berliners defeated HSG Wetzlar with a lot of effort with a score of 32:30 (17:16) and maintained their lead in the table for the time being, the SCM had no problems with a 35:25 (22:13) in the East duel against newly promoted ThSV Eisenach. The Magdeburg Champions League winner (46:6 points) played one game less than the Füchsen (47:7) and therefore has the championship in their own hands.

In Berlin, the spectators initially saw a hard-fought duel in which the Foxes only consistently showed their superiority on the scoreboard after the break. From Max Darj’s 20:19 (37th minute), coach Jaron Siewert’s team gained a lead that lasted until the end of the game. For the Berliners, the newly crowned world handball player and world champion Mathias Gidsel once again became the best thrower with seven goals. Füchse goalkeeper Viktor Kireev also showed a strong performance.

The triple is possible for Magdeburg

Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team from Magdeburg left no doubt about their success right from the start. After a one-sided 60 minutes, the Icelandic Omar Ingi Magnusson was the SCM’s best thrower with seven goals and is aiming for the historic triple this season: In the DHB Cup, Magdeburg will play in the semi-finals of the Final Four tournament in Cologne on April 13th the Foxes, the club from Saxony-Anhalt is early in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

“The first half was the foundation for this victory. We did well in defense and exploited our chances well, everything that goes with it was there,” said Tim Hornke from Magdeburg with satisfaction at Dyn.

Record champions THW Kiel returned to the road to success a week after the clear defeat in the northern derby against SG Flensburg-Handewitt (26:33) with a lot of effort. Coach Filip Jicha’s team won 28:27 (14:13) at TBV Lemgo Lippe.

Cup winners Rhein-Neckar Löwen won their tenth win of the season in a completely messed up season: The 33:29 (15:11) against Frisch Auf Göppingen ended a series of three league defeats in a row. VfL Gummersbach preserved its chance of international business with a 34:31 (17:15) win at HC Erlangen. On Saturday, SG Flensburg-Handewitt had already consolidated their third place in the table with a 31:28 win against TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. The team around national player Johannes Golla can still hope for the Champions League. It was the first Bundesliga defeat of the year for Lower Saxony.
