MagniFi Mini AX: Polk Audio updates its ultra-compact soundbar

With the MagniFi Mini AX, Polk Audio brings Dolby Atmos and DTS:X to its ultra-compact soundbar model. This AX version also stands out from its predecessor with more elaborate connectivity and a sleeker design.

The American manufacturer Polk Audio has just announced the upcoming release of a new version of its ultra-compact soundbar: the MagniFi Mini AX. It differs in particular from the old MagniFi Mini “just short” by support for the three-dimensional audio formats Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. To do this, it has five speakers (three in charge of midrange and two tweeters) distributed on its front face, compared to six on the previous model.

Having no dedicated loudspeakers for the reproduction of pitch channels, the MagniFi Mini AX only virtualizes the impression of a sound bubble. This is why Polk Audio has integrated its proprietary SDA (Stereo Dimensional Array) technology which allows for a widened soundstage as well as the creation of phantom speakers in the room. For better surround sound, the MagniFi Mini AX can be paired with two SR2 surround speakers sold separately for €179 per pair.

The MagniFi Mini AX also differs from the “very short” MagniFi Mini by a slightly revised design and proportions. The new bar remains faithful to its name, however, with an ultra-compact size (36.6 × 10.4 × 7.9 cm) which allows it to be slid almost anywhere, which will particularly appeal to people who do not have not a big space in front of their TV. The wireless subwoofer has also seen its appearance and dimensions slightly modified (18.2 × 39.6 × 37.1 cm) while retaining the same philosophy as its predecessor.

The new bar still has a series of buttons on the top allowing you to perform the most essential commands such as changing sources, activating Bluetooth or managing the volume. To go further, the MagniFi Mini AX is sold with a small remote control with more settings. A screen placed on the front panel also makes it possible to clearly follow the orders made.

The new MagniFi Mini AX features connectivity very similar to that of its predecessor. There is thus an optical S / PDIF input, a minijack input and an HDMI input this time compatible with eARC to allow the transmission of Dolby Atmos and DTS: X streams from the television. The MagniFi Mini AX also supports AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast and Spotify Connect protocols through a wifi connection and also has Bluetooth connectivity.

Like the majority of Polk Audio soundbars, the MagniFi Mini AX has different listening modes (Movie, Music, Night) and the VoiceAdjust function which allows dialogue to be highlighted more so that it does not end up immersed in the action scenes. Polk Audio has also integrated the BassAdjust function to improve the crossover between the subwoofer and the bar.

The MagniFi Mini AX will be available by the end of March for €479.
