The 32-year-old, suspected of having stabbed three young men, including a 16-year-old minor, on the night of Friday to Saturday, on the esplanade Cœur de Maine, near the castle of Angers, is from of Sudan and lives in France in a regular situation after having obtained the status of political refugee.
He was presented Sunday evening to an examining magistrate, then indicted for “aggravated murders by the commission, in the near future, of one or more other crimes”, “attempted aggravated murders” and “sexual assaults” .
The suspect was then remanded in custody. The suspect faces life imprisonment.
No explanations
“During his police custody as before the investigating magistrate, he did not provide any real explanations for his actions, simply stating that he had no memory of them because of his alcoholism”, according to the prosecutor.
The investigation made it possible to specify that “the facts began following the sexual assault of two young girls by the mis en cause”, indicated Sunday evening the prosecutor of Angers Éric Bouillard.
“Away at first, he returned armed with a knife around 2:50 am (Saturday morning, editor’s note) to deliver fatal blows” to three young people aged 16, 18 and 20, continued the magistrate.
The suspect is a Sudanese political refugee. Arrived in France in 2016, the suspect obtained the status of political refugee in 2018 “and is therefore in a regular situation (in France) until 2028”, specified the magistrate.
According to Ouest France, the suspect had been described by witnesses as “heavily alcoholic” at the time of the events.
He was known to the police for acts of violence and alcohol within the jurisdiction of the Saumur prosecutor’s office. But he was known to reside in Angers.
