Major damage prevented – carpentry fire: roofer reacted perfectly

In the middle of the densely built-up center of Bad Schwanberg in western Styria, a fire in a carpentry workshop could have had devastating consequences. But the employees and an uninvolved roofer reacted perfectly.

The fire in the Schwanberg carpentry workshop started on Friday morning next to a workshop oven. The employees quickly noticed the fire and began to fight the fire with hand fire extinguishers. “Practically at the same time, an uninvolved roofer who was able to see the company affected by the fire from a construction site far away made an emergency call with the presence of mind,” says the fire department report. The comrades advanced into the smoke-filled workshop using heavy breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire completely off. Since a nest of embers was also found in the ceiling structure of the hall, opening the roof was unavoidable. A later alarm could have been disastrous. “In the end, the operator of the carpentry shop can speak of a blessing in disguise. Due to the naturally existing fire loads in the wood processing company, it would have been unthinkable if there had been a delay in fighting the fire or alerting the fire departments in the densely built-up Bad Schwanberg area. Optimal action by everyone involved has prevented major damage,” praises the fire department. The exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are being determined by the police. 54 emergency services from five fire departments (Bad Schwanberg, Gressenberg, Grünberg-Aichegg, Hollenegg, Steyeregg) were deployed, as well as the breathing apparatus from the Magna-Lannach company fire department and the emergency control vehicle from the Wildbach fire department.
