Make finger paints yourself: It's that easy

Finger paints are very easy to make yourself: four simple ingredients are used to create harmless paint for painting and being creative in no time at all. Here's how to do it!

Even the little ones have a lot of fun to let off steam creatively. Finger paints are suitable for painting, blotting and smearing thick paper or cardboard. But caution is advised here, because conventional finger paints may contain questionable ingredients. Parents can therefore either pay attention to an Öko-Test judgment or simply do the finger paints themselves. The latter is easier than expected and only requires four simple ingredients that you are guaranteed to have at home!

Make finger paints yourself: that's how it works

Ingredients for a color:

  • 5 tbsp flour
  • 100 ml water (lukewarm)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Organic food coloring or vegetable colors

Utils:

  • old bowl (attention: paint residues can remain on the material)
  • Fork or whisk
  • Screw jar

Manual:

  1. Pour the water into a bowl. Add the flour and salt and stir everything thoroughly so that no lumps are left. The salt ensures that the colors last longer and also makes the mixture salty so that the little ones don't eat it. To make the colors more fluid, you can add a little more water if necessary.
  2. Finally, stir in some food coloring (alternatively vegetable coloring) until you get a uniform mass and the desired color. The more food coloring you add, the stronger the color.
  3. To make more colors, you repeat the instructions with another food coloring or another vegetable color pigment.
  4. Then fill the colors in a jar and store them in the refrigerator. Here they stay for up to two weeks. If the paint smells funny, you should dispose of it.

If you don't have food coloring on hand, you can work with sap or stock.

  • Green colour: Boiled spinach brew
  • Orange color: Carrot juice
  • Purple color: Blueberry juice
  • Red color: Beetroot juice
  • Yellow COLOUR: Turmeric powder

Notes on coloring with juices or broth: When you add juice or brew, the color liquefies. Therefore, use less water for mixing or add a little more flour afterwards to adjust the consistency.

Let's go … put the little ones in old clothes and then they can start experimenting with colors!
