  • Samsung presented a new smartphone concept at CES 2024. It features a backwards foldable display.
  • One half remains longer than the other so that the camera is not obscured.
  • It is not known whether and when this technology will be used in series production.

While fans wait for the Galaxy S24, Samsung is showing what future Galaxy phones could look like at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. With the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy Z Fold, Samsung has been a pioneer in foldable smartphones for years. Now the Korean company has presented a new concept for such devices and wants to take things one step further in the future.

The so-called “Flex In & Out” concept is intended to offer the foldables not only the classic opening and closing but also the option of folding the display backwards. As you can see in the video from the US online magazine Cnet, the smartphone can be opened and closed like a book, but above all it can also be bent backwards. This is not possible with the current models on the market.

We can reassure anyone who fears that this will obscure the camera. The half with the camera is a little longer, so the camera is not covered by the other half of the display.

The technology could be used to create a Galaxy Z Flip that only offers one screen instead of an internal and external display as before. This could reduce the price of the device and make room in the case for, for example, a larger battery or better cameras.

Even if the concept looks promising, it must of course be emphasized that the future of this concept is still unknown and will probably require a few more years of development before it goes into series production. Samsung showed a multi-foldable display at a trade fair in Seoul in 2021. However, this has not yet been used in a cell phone from the South Korean manufacturer.

Nevertheless, Samsung has once again shown that they are one of the most innovative companies in the world when it comes to displays.
