Maleficent 2 is broadcast this evening on M6, the opportunity to ask the question: is a 3rd part in the pipes?
Released in May 2014, the first Maleficent created a surprise, collecting 758 million dollars in worldwide revenue for a budget of 180 million. Logically, the film worn by Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie was entitled to a sequel, Maleficent: The Power of Evil, released in theaters in October 2019.
This second opus, with a slightly higher budget than the first, does not work as well. However, he collected nearly 500 million dollars in greenbacks internationally. In all, the two feature films can boast of having exceeded one billion dollars at the box office.
However, despite this success, Disney has still not officially launched the 3rd film in the saga. Three years after the release of Power of Evil in cinemas, no news has been given about a sequel project.
A snapshot posted on Instagram by director Joachim Rønning may however suggest that Maleficent 3 would be in development on the side of Mickey’s firm. On January 27, the filmmaker shared a snapshot of himself at his office with the following caption: “New Adventures. @Disney”.
In the comments, the producer of the saga, Matthew Smith, had replied: “Happy to work together”followed by a fairy emoji, ending with “#M3”. It was enough for the fans to get excited at the idea that a 3rd episode of the Maleficent saga is in the pipes.
However, this has not been formalized by those concerned; we must therefore take this little clue with a grain of salt. In the second part, Maleficent had ended up giving her blessing to Aurora for her marriage to Prince Phillip, even attending their union. This end seemed to offer a nice conclusion to the adventures of the two protagonists.
This is why, if a 3rd film comes to see the light of day, the authors will perhaps offer us a different story, without Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, but with new actresses. For the moment, we are still without news of any project.
This did not prevent the two actresses from continuing their collaboration with Disney. Angelina Jolie played Thena in The Eternals at Marvel. As for Fanning, she shot the Hulu series The Great and The Girl from Plainville.
