Management speaks of “mutiny”
Notorious prison in Tehran is on fire

Not only are convicted political prisoners held in Tehran’s Ewin prison, but now also hundreds of participants in protests critical of the regime. According to the prison authorities, there is now a “mutiny”. The situation is under control, they say.

According to prison officials, a short-term mutiny broke out in the notorious Ewin prison in the Iranian capital of Tehran in the evening. “Hooligans and rioters” started an argument with the prison guards and then set the prison’s textile warehouse on fire, it said.

The fire brigade is in the process of putting out the fire. However, the situation in the detention center is under control again, the prison management said, according to the Irna news agency. The report did not mention whether the mutiny was connected to the ongoing system-critical protests in the country.

Previously, about the daily newspaper “Shargh” reported on Twitter about the fire without naming a cause. There were numerous images and videos of the fire on social media. There was also talk of shots and explosions in the detention center.

Evin prison in northern Tehran not only holds numerous political prisoners, but also hundreds of demonstrators who have been imprisoned there for taking part in the system-critical protests of the past four weeks.
