Eight films are up for election for the Oscar for “Best Film” in 2021. But where can you actually see the stripes? Streaming? Movie theater? Both?

That everything will be different at this year’s Oscars, which will be awarded on April 25th in the USA, proves a very specific question that film fans will have to ask themselves this time: Where can you find the eight works that have been named “Best Film” are nominated to see at all? Instead of the conventional answer – in the cinema, of course – this is much more complicated due to the corona pandemic. Here is the guide to all eight films that are competing for the world’s most important film award in exactly one month – from “Mank” to “Judas and the Black Messiah”.

As a stream – and can even be seen

Anyone who has a Netflix or Amazon Prime Video subscription can access three of the eight Oscar contenders the second they read this. Including the potential winner of the evening, “Mank”. The drama by “Fight Club” director David Fincher (58) has been nominated for ten Academy Awards – more than any other contender. The film with Gary Oldman (63), who deals with the genesis of the classic “Citizen Kane”, was uploaded to Netflix last year.

One of them is “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, which tells the true story of a group of men who faced a scandalous trial in the USA in 1969. The drama with top cast (Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Michael Keaton) even appeared on Netflix on October 16. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime customers are already enjoying the drama “Sound of Metal”. In the Amazon Original, a drummer, played by Riz Ahmed (38), is shocked to discover that he has lost his hearing. Like Oldman, Ahmed is nominated for an Oscar for “Best Actor”.

Still planned as a cinema release

Many film distributors had not yet given up hope of being able to present their films in the cinema again as early as next April. In theory, the film releases of “Judas and the Black Messiah” (April 12), “Minari” (April 15), “The Father” (April 22) and “Promising Young Woman” (April 29) have not yet started April) stock. In view of the federal government’s latest lockdown regulations, this will certainly not work for all or none of them. In any case, alternative release strategies before the Oscars on April 25 have not yet been communicated.

On the other hand, “nomad land” could represent a special case. The film with Frances McDormand (63) in the lead role should actually come to the cinema on April 8th and has since been postponed indefinitely. However, as announced in early March, the film will be available at least in the UK from April 30th via Disney +. It is quite possible that something will happen in this regard for Germany as well.
