Our visual organs have a lot to do. The relaxation teacher Manuela Egeler explains why we should treat him to yoga.

Eye yoga – what is that?

Manuela Egener: A program that can strengthen vision, prevent ametropia and relieve headaches and neck pain.

Who should do it?

It is suitable for anyone who uses their eyes for a long time every day. We often sit for eight hours computer and look at the TV or cell phone in the evening. This puts a lot of strain on our eyes.

What exercises do you do to help them?

The viewing position follows the posture of the body: That’s why we first straighten the body, stretch and stretch. We wake up with all our senses – sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. Eye yoga gets your circulation going again and loosens your muscles.

What is the easiest exercise that I can get started with without much prior knowledge?

Rub your hands together so that they become warm, then place them like bowls over your eyes and cross your fingertips on your forehead. Close your eyes, put your elbows on your knees and notice the darkness. Breathe consciously with a deep breath through your nose – and let the tension in both eyes go.

It sounds like I could easily do that every now and then anywhere.

Correct. All that matters is that you do it! The where doesn’t matter. However, you need instructions. But creating awareness that it’s worth doing something for your eyes is the first step.

Does eye yoga also help me if I already have severe ametropia?

Yes. Even those who have been wearing glasses for years certainly don’t want their diopters to deteriorate every two or three years. Eye yoga can help with this.

What else can it do?

Everything in the body is connected. When I train the eyes, I also train the relaxation of the jaw – this is where the strongest muscles, the chewing muscle, are located. If I know that, I also know how much tension is attached to it. It also has an impact on the neck. If an area hurts, I go into a protective position that tenses the entire skull. That’s why eye yoga can also help with headaches and neck pain.

For the ultimate perspective

Eye rolling helps

Circle your eyes eight times to the right and the same thing once to the left.

Don’t forget to blink

It maintains mobility and moisturizes the eye. Simple exercise: Blink as hard and fast as you can. Then consciously close your eyes for a few seconds.

Wander into the distance

When working on a screen, let your gaze wander out the window into the distance at least once an hour – for at least 20 seconds.
