Margot Hellwig: The folk music star received the shock diagnosis breast cancer

Folk music star Margot Hellwig (78, "Servus Gruezi und Hallo") has been battling cancer in the past few years, as has only just become known. "I had breast cancer in 2014," explains the singer in an interview with the magazine "Bunte". After showering, when she dried off, she "felt a strange feeling in her chest, not a lump, but a strange feeling that there was something strange in my chest". So she went to the gynecologist. She didn't recognize it, but Hellwig didn't give up. An MRI scan finally brought certainty.

There were two tumors. "What I sensed was such a preliminary stage. And inside there was a small, aggressive tumor, and it would most likely have caused me big problems in a very short time," Hellwig continued. She quickly underwent surgery. "My right breast was removed and a new one was made from my belly fat," says the Bavarian artist. She was "very satisfied" with that. She didn't have to do chemotherapy.

Afraid of the next checkup?

Regular examinations are mandatory after such diagnosis and treatment. "I would actually only have to go to the examination once a year," says Hellwig. But it plays it safe and can be checked "every six months". In addition, she goes to the gynecologist "every six months," as she says. "I don't want to miss anything. Because it's easy to overlook something," she knows.

Corona, however, has now put a small line through her conscientious scheduling. "I would have had another check-up now, but I postponed it until autumn because of Corona," said Hellwig. But don't be afraid. "I'm fine, I'm well so far. My doctor says I'm old, so if the cancer grows, the cancer would grow slowly anyway."

The musician is grateful that she got off so well. "I can only advise all women if they feel something: don't let go and have them examined," she appeals.

Success with the mother

Margot and her mother, Maria Hellwig (1920-2010), sang as a duo Maria and Margot Hellwig with hits like "Ferienpolka" (1970), "Das Kufsteiner Lied" (1974) or "Servus, Grüezi und Hallo" (1977) in the hearts of folk music fans.
