Maria Sharapova: the former world number 1 pregnant with her first child


She shared the good news on social media. As she celebrated her 35th birthday on Tuesday, Maria Sharapova revealed on her birthday that she was pregnant with her first child.

The former tennis world No. 1 posted a photo of herself on a beach by the water. And on the picture, she holds her rounded belly in her hands which leaves little room for doubt. “Eating a birthday cake for two has always been my specialty,” she wrote on her Instagram account, where she is followed by more than 4.2 million subscribers.

The Russian, who won five Grand Slam titles (Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008 and Roland-Garros in 2012 and 2014), retired from the courts in February 2020 before become engaged in December of the same year to British businessman Alexander Gilkes.

Maria Sharapova, who had a turbulent end to her career with a positive meldonium test, on the other hand, did not specify how long she has been pregnant, nor when the delivery is planned.
