42 years ago, a little guy named Mario appeared in a video game, who was then unaware of the worldwide popularity that awaited him. In fact, the little plumber from the Nintendo team is now known all over the world, with almost three hundred video games featuring him.
After a first film adaptation in 1993 by directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel with actor Bob Hoskins in the lead role, a new film, this one animated, was released this year. Perseverance
For the filmmakers, the central theme of the film is perseverance: “The film tells us that we should never give up. The only way to lose when playing Super Mario is to give up – and if you persist, you get better and eventually defeat Bowser. This therefore became the major theme of the film“.
An unloved first adaptation
The previous adaptation, Super Mario Bros., was a monumental flop, bringing in $20 million for an estimated budget of $48 million. It has since been elevated to the status of nanar, and remains one of the worst video game adaptations. Result: Nintendo never again produced a live-action film adapted from one of its licenses.
Bowser musician
In the film, the super-villain Bowser is a musician – an unexpected detail that was not included in the first version of the script. He performs a song called Peacheswritten by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond and John Spiker, faithful collaborator and technician of Jack Black, who doubles the gigantic ferocious turtle.
