What if Sonic faced Mario in a live movie? Jeff Fowler, director of the two feature films on the blue hedgehog, would be delighted to stage this confrontation.
Crossover universes are on a roll right now, especially thanks to Spider-Man No Way Home, which ushered in a new era within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Paramount has understood this well as its two parts of Sonic are eyeing the side of the House of Ideas in terms of spectacle and fun. Will the studio go even further by offering to cross the scents of video game universes? This is the question posed by the site ComicBook.com to Sonic director Jeff Fowler.
MARIO AND SONIC IN THE RING?
If the opportunity arose to direct a Super Smash Bros. movie, would he be up for it?
“Nothing would make me happier than throwing all these video game characters into a battle royale and doing a big Smash Bros. thing. It would probably take some work from the lawyers before that could happen”Fowler said.
But what is it Super Smash Bros.. ? It is a series of fighting video games created by Nintendo in 1999.
Different from other fighting games, they consist of ejecting your opponent from the arena after having dealt him the most possible damage, represented by a percentage. The higher the latter, the more likely you are to send your enemy flying.
The particularity of this video game also lies in the multitude of its characters, all from different universes. For example, Sonic can battle against Mario, Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid games, can slash against Pokemon Pikachu, or Ken from Street Fighter can take on Donkey Kong.
Nintendo pulled off the biggest crossover in video game history with this franchise, bringing together the most popular heroes for an epic battle. The saga includes 5 episodes, released between 1999 and 2018. The last opus, Named Ultimate, sold 23 million copies. A triumph.
Super Smash Bros.. has become a real phenomenon, gathering millions of fans around the world. Official competitions are even organized regularly, arousing exceptional enthusiasm.
A Super Smash Bros. movie. would therefore potentially be a wild success in the cinema, provided that an enthusiast takes the reins of the project. Jeff Fowler is up for it, but not sure that his adaptations of Sonic will reassure aficionados.
“Put Mario and Sonic in the ring, everyone is dying, right? It’s just a classic”concluded the filmmaker at the microphone of ComicBook.com.
In the meantime, a Mario animated film will land in cinemas on December 21, 2022, proof that Nintendo is no longer closed to porting its licenses to the big screen.
