Market: Air India close to historic order of 500 planes, sources say

PARIS/NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Air India, owned by Indian conglomerate Tata Group, is set to place orders with Airbus and Boeing for at least 500 aircraft worth tens of billions of dollars, Air India said on Sunday. Reuters from industry sources.

These orders are for a maximum of 400 single-aisle aircraft and at least 100 wide-bodied aircraft, including Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s and 777s, the sources said on condition of anonymity, adding that the final touch to this operation would take place in the next days.

At list prices, orders of this magnitude, including options, could exceed $100 billion, one of the largest ever by a single airline in terms of volume.

American Airlines had ordered, ten years ago, simultaneously from Boeing and Airbus 460 planes.

Asked, Airbus and Boeing declined to comment while Tata Group did not respond immediately.
