Market: Wall Street ends up ahead of quarterly company results


The New York Stock Exchange ended higher on Monday as investors expect a busy week with the publication of quarterly results from many key companies which could give indications on the health of the American economy.

The Dow Jones index gained 0.67%, or 253.58 points, to 38,239.98 points.

The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 gained 43.37 points, or 0.87% to 5,010.60 points.

The Nasdaq Composite advanced 169.30 points (1.11%) to 15,451.305.

Mega-caps that suffered last week like Apple, Amazon, Tesla and Alphabet finished higher on Monday.

“Investors are looking ahead to this week when very strong earnings will be released and there is concern about the attitude of the Fed, which is pushing back against any rate cut,” said Lamar Villere, portfolio manager at Villere & Co in New Orleans.

On the macroeconomic front, the market awaits the US gross domestic product (GDP) figures for the first quarter on Thursday and the publication of the PCE inflation index – the Fed’s preferred index for judging inflation – on Friday. and consumer spending for the month of March in the United States.
