What are the largest groups on the stock market by country? To find out, the BFM Bourse editorial team has decided to devote an article to each major market, retaining the ten largest market capitalizations by country based on data from companiesmarket.com.

Spain remains a relatively small stock market, with a total capitalization of $775 billion, according to companiesmarket.com.

A look at its largest market capitalizations shows that the Madrid stock market does not have many mega-market capitalizations unlike London, Paris or even Zurich.

Only one value exceeds 100 billion dollars (145 billion) and it is Inditex, the parent company of Zara (and Zara Home, Bershka and Massimo Dutti) which recently delighted the market with its annual results . Remember that Inditex is nearly 65% ​​owned by Armancio Ortega, the largest fortune in Spain (and the 15th in the world according to Bloomberg) and his family.

Telecoms, banks and airports

But once past Inditex, the following groups weigh less than 80 billion dollars. Second, Iberdrola is a gas and electricity producer with a strong focus on renewable energies. In 2023, wind, hydro and solar represented 61% of its own electricity production. Its renewable capacities exceeded 42 gigawatts in 2023 and should reach 60 gigawatts in 2025, according to the independent research firm AlphaValue.

The country’s major banks are all three in the top five: Santander is third, BBVA – or “Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria” in its full name – is fourth, followed by CaixaBank, fifth.

You may not know Aena, the group that ranks sixth. But it is quite simply an airport operator which claims first place in the world in terms of passengers, with 362 million passengers passing through its various airports (compared to 99.7 million for Aéroports de Paris), according to its numbers. The group operates around fifty airports in Spain, and around forty internationally, in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Jamaica, etc. And in London (Luton airport).

Specializing in travel reservation and distribution solutions for travel agencies, hotels and airlines, Amadeus IT group ranks seventh.

Ferrovial takes eighth place. This company looks a bit like Vinci, since it is present in highways, construction but also energy infrastructure, water treatment and airports. The company has interests in Heathrow airports (London) and those of Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton, in the United Kingdom.

The top 10 is completed by Telefonica, a telecoms operator with 388 million customers worldwide, as well as Naturgy, an energy specialist.
