Married at first sight: are unions celebrated in Gibraltar legal in France?

For the sixth season of Married at first sight, M6 has decided to no longer celebrate the unions in Grans but in Gibraltar. In this territory, formalities are simple and marriages are recognized in France.

Weddings will soon resume on M6! From this Monday, March 21, the sixth season of Married at first sight will be broadcast every Monday. Great novelty this year: the unions of the show will no longer be celebrated at the town hall of Grans. Indeed, the chain has decided to relocate them… abroad! “After 5 years, and with the mayor of Grans, we wanted to end this great collaborationexplained Virginie Dhers, the artistic producer, during the press conference. We wanted to renew ourselves, so as not to tire people and go even further in the experience. It is therefore the foreigner that we have chosen.” The candidates of Married at first sight will therefore fly to Gibraltar, the British territory located in the south of Spain.

“We needed to get our participants out of their comfort zone, but the mechanics were always the same. Things had to move to involve themexplained one of the experts of the show, Estelle Dossin. (…) When we are faced with a form of insecurity, we are forced to trust the other more and it is a positive bias to promote love at first sight. Especially since Gibraltar has a considerable advantage: the marriages celebrated there are legal in France. “Gibraltar allows marriages to be recognized in France and the specificity is that the formalities are quite simple”, added the producer of the M6 show. Couples must present a passport, birth certificate, and stay for at least one night in Gibraltar, before or after the wedding.

Married at first sight: this change that bothered the candidates

“In Gibraltar, it is the civil registrar who marries. There is a ceremony with texts in English. We do not see on the air but there is a translator. The participants also had sentences in English which caused some cold sweats, she joked. Otherwise it’s like in France, they leave with a marriage certificate.” Note that in 2021, 1,488 marriages were celebrated in Gibraltar, 90% of which were for foreigners. And if the health crisis had a strong impact on the unions, the British territory was spared. “Weddings never stopped there during the crisis. They managed well so we were sure that weddings would be able to take place, explained Virginie Dhers. Finally, there is the discovery side and as it is not too far the families were able to go to the weddings. See you this Monday, March 21 to discover the 14 candidates of this season.
