Could we one day see an adaptation of Spider-Man or Batman signed by Steven Soderbergh? Would the director of Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich or even Contagion be ready to set foot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at DC Comics or more generally in the world of superheroes?

Currently in promotion for his new feature film KIMI (carried by Zoë Kravitz), the American filmmaker recently spoke on this subject at the microphone of The Daily Beastexplaining that the genre didn’t really suit him as a director, for very specific reasons:

“I’m not a snob, I’m not claiming it’s inferior at all”he said. “The important thing is the universe to which we belong as a storyteller. My feet are too firmly planted on solid ground to let myself go in a universe where the laws of gravity do not exist. .”

“I just have a lack of imagination in that regard. That’s why my only foray into pure science fiction was basically a character drama that had the particularity of taking place in a spaceship”continues Soderbergh alluding to Solaris, with George Clooney.

The director concludes his answer by mentioning a specificity common to most superhero films, and which prevents him from truly integrating this universe:

“Nobody makes love!”he exclaims. “I don’t know how to explain to people how they should behave in a world where that doesn’t exist.”
