Marvel: new mutants in the next X-Men?

Marvel is currently in full reflection on the future of mutants within the MCU and could adapt the comics of Joss Whedon to the cinema.

In 2019, Disney regained the film rights to the X-Men with the acquisition of studio 20th Century Fox. The fans then thought that the mutants were going to be the first to be entitled to a reboot.

Yet in 2022, no X-Men film is yet on track. Although Professor X (Patrick Stewart) briefly appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the other mutants have yet to make inroads into House of Ideas feature films.

According to the website Screen GeeksMarvel is currently looking into a new X-Men film based on the series of 4 comics launched by Joss Whedon, Astonishing X-Men.

Started in 2004 and terminated in 2008, these follow New X-Men by Grant Morrison and feature four different story arcs: Gifted, Dangerous, Torn and Unstoppable.

In these comics, mutants must stop an alien race from destroying Earth. The most famous X-Men left the team following a conflict with Professor X. These comics therefore feature a new team of mutants composed in particular of Emma Frost, Cyclops, Shadowcat, Wolverine, the Beast and Colossus.

Adapting this series of comics would therefore breathe new life into this saga already made up of a dozen feature films.

Joss Whedon previously collaborated with Marvel on the films Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, but the director has since been at the center of several controversies, so a return to directing seems unlikely.

While a new X-Men movie is currently only in discussion stage, recent nods to mutants in Marvel works Doctor Strange 2, Mrs. Marvel, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and She-Hulk prove that the studio is actively working on a new iteration.

The New Mutants could very well be introduced in the third installment of the Adventures of Deadpool, being written by Rhett Reese, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy.
