Material shortage – In the auto industry, there is a shortage of everything and everywhere

Lack of material and no end in sight: almost nine out of ten companies in the automotive industry have problems with the replenishment of materials. This puts the industry in a worse position than most other branches of industry.

This is the result of a survey conducted by the Munich Ifo Institute among German companies. Around 88 percent of them complain about the shortage of primary products and raw materials. This means that vehicle manufacturers and suppliers are much more affected than the average of all companies in the manufacturing sector: A total of 73.3 percent of the German companies surveyed speak of problems. The manufacturers of electrical equipment are most affected by the lack of supplies, with almost 93 percent complaining about a lack of availability. For consumers, this means continued long delivery times and high prices, especially on the used car market. The global chip shortage is particularly affecting the production of electric cars. Nevertheless, their market share continues to rise, in Austria 13.3% of new cars were fully electric in the first half of 2022 – equivalent to around 14,500 vehicles and a 1.9 percentage point increase in market share compared to last year. Compared with a similar survey in March there has at least been some relief: at that time, 90.1 percent of companies in the automotive industry still had material shortages, the industry average was 74.6 percent.
